Viking Bags Tactical Extra Large Motorcycle Backpack — Honest Rider Review

Viking Bags Tactical Extra Large Motorcycle Backpack — Honest Rider Review

Introduction

I appreciated Viking Bags sending the Tactical Extra Large Motorcycle Backpack my way for review. They've built a solid reputation in the moto community for functional, rider-first gear and I was happy to put it through its paces and give an honest take. Here's what I found after getting it in hand and mounted on my bike.

First Impressions

Right out of the box, the build quality is immediately noticeable. The materials feel substantial, the zippers are smooth, and the overall construction has that purposeful, tactical look that works on and off the bike. This isn't a fashion backpack with a moto label slapped on it. It's built for riders.

Features Breakdown

  • Material: The outer material is heavy duty and built to take abuse. It has a substantial feel that holds up to the elements and the wear of regular riding. This isn't gear that's going to show its age after one season.
  • Zippers: Heavy duty with smooth action throughout. The zipper pulls are sized well enough to work with gloves on, which matters when you're stopped on the road and need to get in fast.
  • Storage and Organization: Multiple compartments cover everything from main gear storage to smaller essentials. Every compartment has a purpose and the layout is intuitive once you've opened it up.
  • Glasses Case and Dry Bag: Viking Bags includes both as accessories. The dry bag is particularly useful since your valuables stay protected if you get caught in rain. Both attach directly to the MOLLE system so they stay with the bag.
  • MOLLE System: MOLLE webbing runs along the exterior, allowing you to attach additional pouches, accessories, or tools. It adds versatility beyond the bag itself and is a feature you'll appreciate more the longer you ride with it.

Mounting It on My Bike

Here's where it got interesting. I ride a 2023 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic, which has a sissy bar with a backrest pad, not the standard tall bare sissy bar this bag is designed around. So the install wasn't by the book.

I had to work the straps differently than the standard mount to get it seated right. Once I dialed it in though, the bag is solid. No movement, no shifting. It rides stable.

If you're on a Vulcan 900 or any bike with a sissy bar and backrest pad, don't let that stop you. The strap system has enough adjustability to work with different configurations. You just have to be willing to experiment with the routing. Take your time on the first mount and you'll get there.

On the Bike

Once mounted, it disappears into the ride. No pulling, no bounce, no interference with posture or movement. For commuters or weekend riders who need real carrying capacity without strapping a hard case, this is a legitimate solution.

Who It's For

  • Riders with standard or non-standard sissy bar setups who need a versatile bag
  • Commuters who need capacity without bulk
  • Weekend warriors who pack light but smart
  • Riders who want gear that works on and off the bike

Verdict

Viking Bags built something practical here. The Tactical Extra Large doesn't try to be everything. It focuses on being a reliable, well-constructed riding backpack and delivers on that. The strap system is flexible enough to handle setups outside the norm, and once it's dialed in, it's rock solid.

If you're in the market for a moto backpack that can handle real miles, this one earns the recommendation.
